MATCHROOM SPORT ... THE WORLD'S LEADING PRODUCERS OF TELEVISED POKER

NO LOVE FOR THE COWBOY AS - 13/09/2006

Heat 4 of the PartyPoker.com World Open was an absolute classic. With match favourite Kenna James starting out like a rock, Johnny "Texas" Hewston began as the aggressor raising pre-flop and taking down pots with stone-cold bluffs. As Hewston continued to raise in early position, Kenna decided to take a stand and re-raised with 8 9. Hewston wasn't bluffing holding AJ and when the all in was announced by big Jon, KJ looked like a rabbit in headlights and laid them down. The mood as the table changed and Hewston continued to bluff and win pots, destroying Matt Dale's mind with an all in bluff - and then showing his rags!

Matt Dale never recovered and made an early exit and as newcomer Dale Hoy's chips dribbled away next, it was left to the more experienced four remaining players to fight it out. Raymond ‘Stingray' McKenna was next to go in unlucky fashion when he moved all in pre-flop with AJ. "KJ" couldn't lay his KJ down and when three spades came on the flop, Kenna needed a spade or a king to take the pot down. The river brought a King of spades to make Kenna the flush and put him right back in the match.

Jonny Hewston began to lose concentration and when he tried one bluff to many, Toni Varjavand moved all in with his set and Hewston had no choice but to lay them down after committing nearly half his stack in chips and the German took a big lead.

In an unbelievable turn of events, Kenna James made a big pre-flop raise with A7and talked Johnny Hewston into going over the top and move all in with J3. Kenna called in a heartbeat. The flop came 2 4 4 and Kenna became an even bigger favourite. When a 5 came on the turn it opened up extra outs for Johnny and an Ace on the river made him the straight and delivered a killer blow for the Cowboy that sent him crashing.

As the heads up battle between Vardjavand and Hewston began it was "Texas" with just a 30,000 chip lead. Roles reversed as Vardjavand took down the first pot with a bluff to take the lead but Hewston soon went into overdrive and when the German chased a flush with bottom pair into a 230,000 pot the Englishman took a big chip lead.

When Hewston picked up pocket rockets and made the minimum raise, Vardjavand moved all in with K10 and Hewston made the call. The flop stood firm for Johnny to take him through to the semis, and with aggression and fearlessness like that he'll be one to watch in the tournament.
