Saturday at the WSOP
9am: The hangover is too much for me
11am: Coffee at Starbucks, discuss sportsbetting options with Padraig. The drink of choice these days is an iced venti redeye. It’s nothing short of fantastic and contains all the caffeine one needs to get to noon without stopping talking once.
2:30pm: Fried Chicken and Waffles on Martin Luther King Avenue. This place delivered as promised. Padraig, Mad Marty, Katharine and I all had both fried chicken and waffles in its various guises. What a way to start the day. Mad Marty told the manager that “although he was initially suspicious of the combination, I am quite satisfied by both the chicken and the waffles at your establishment.” He then offered to tell her a story about Lord Louie Mount Battin, who had never eaten fried chicken or waffles.
4pm: We dropped Padraig off at the Rio. Apparently he was going to play something called poker. I understand there’s a tournament on. We went to several thrift shops, where Mad Marty found golf clubs and I found a 1965 first edition of Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.
8pm: We gathered everybody up and went for Korean barbecue. Even better than the fried chicken and waffles.
Stan James has got outright prices up for the main event. There are several tempting offers at 2000-1 with 1/8 odds for the top nine. I picked out a dozen players who seemed like a brilliant bet at the price before I remembered that I’m angry with Stan James and don’t bet there anymore on principle. So I’ll share the list. These must be good bets at the price.
Richard Ashby
John Dagastino
Prahlad Freedman
Michael Gracz
Bertrand Grospelier
Anthony Lellouche
David Oppenheim
John Tabatabi
Conor Tate
Steve Wong
Dustin Woolf
Oh my. I may have to bet these anyway. Forget principle.
Going to the Rio today. I’m not going to play any poker but may just run into some poker players.
